Memoir Writing Workshop for Students

Maximum 30 students.

Join bestselling author and playwright Alison Wearing for a workshop focused on elevated personal writing. In this workshop, students will learn about the different tools and tactics needed to find their voice and put their own personal stories on paper. Alison will touch on the basics of memoir writing, including obstacles that are faced and common mistakes to avoid. This workshop will include a brief reading of Confessions of a Fairy’s Daughter, followed by an independent writing assignment. Following the workshop, students will head to the Community Studio Theatre for the afternoon performance of Confessions of a Fairy’s Daughter at 12:30pm. We encourage students to bring a packed lunch to eat prior to the performance.

11:15am – 12:00pm: Students Break for Lunch

Alison WearingSince 2009, Alison has performed her one-woman shows in over 35 cities in Canada, the US and Mexico. The solo plays have won top awards in virtually every festival in which they have appeared. Her most recent work Confessions of a Fairy’s Daughter, is both a onewoman show and a bestselling memoir. The book, which chronicles her experience of growing up with a gay father in the 1980s, was shortlisted for the Edna Staebler Award for Creative Nonfiction, nominated for the prestigious RBC Taylor Prize for Non-Fiction, and selected as a Chapters/Indigo Recommended Reads and Top 50 Books of 2013. The onewoman show has been awarded BEST DRAMATIC SCRIPT at NYC’s United Solo, the largest festival of solo theatre in the world, BEST OF FEST at the Stratford Springworks Festival, four BEST OF FEST awards in Canadian Fringe Festivals, and numerous other awards. Alison is based in Stratford, Ontario, Canada.
